Download Instructions using FTP

FTP is only recommended for a small number of files, or where the normal methods above will not work.

  • Open a ftp program, such as Fetch (Mac), Webdrive, or WS_FTP (Windows).
  • Choose binary mode unless you are retrieving text files.
  • Enter the server (for example, swdist.ucsd.edu).
  • Enter the username (for example, microsoft-get).
  • Enter the password that came with the username.

If you use a web browser as your FTP client, Internet Explorer on Windows does not work well getting files from our IIS Windows server 2003 based file servers. Firefox or Webdrive may be appropriate. FTP by design may modify the internal contents of some files in transit, if not using binary mode.
