Notes on Installing Files
Files with names ending in .ISO/.IMG (Windows/Mac/UNIX/Linux) or .DMG (Mac)
These are exact images of physical DVD or CD disks. You can re-create the physical disks exactly as shipped by Microsoft or SAS etc. Windows computers need to use a disk burning program such as Roxio Creator, Nero or similar to re-create DVD or CD disks from images. Macintosh users can use Disk Utility to re-create disks, or can double click most disk images and mount them on the desktop, to use as is. Linux/UNIX users have a bevy of ISO burning tools like MagicISO, cdrecord etc. Microsoft occasionally uses the extension .IMG that is functionally the same as .ISO, so those files can be renamed to .ISO if your software does not recognize the .IMG extension.
Files with names ending in .zip
These are compressed archives of one or more files. Windows XP/Vista/2003/2008 users can right click on the file and use the extract all function to re-create the folder or file contained in the zip archive. Mac users can double click these to de-compress the archive. Windows users should NOT attempt to install directly from the zip archive, even if you can explore in it, as the install most often will fail.
Files with names ending in .exe
These are self extracting or installing windows programs. Just run them. Adobe uses a very small .exe program to start the process of using many other much larger files as an example.
Files with names ending in .7x
This is a included data file from Adobe. You need all of these, as well as the .exe named file for most products that have both types of file names in a download directory.
Look for other "readme.txt, install.pdf" or similar named files, near the files you are downloading, as they may explain specific things you need to know to be successful.
