UCSD Microsoft Select 6.0 Agreement
These software packages are only available to UCSD departments for use on UCSD-owned computers.
Purchase can only be through campus IFIS Index numbers.
The products are offered for initial license purchase, or initial purchase of License and Software Assurance.
Some existing current version Licenses can be put under Software Assurance under special conditions.
This mandatory agreement covers July 1, 1994 - January 31, 2008. The current enrollment ends January 31, 2008, at which time the contract may be continued or terminated.
The price of a complete single distribution with license, media and documentation through the Select program is sometimes more that the UCSD Bookstore price when also purchasing support directly from Microsoft.
Office, Visio, MSDN, and other products require Microsoft Product Activation codes. The bookstore boxed media WILL NOT WORK for these products. Instead users must use a volume license key retrieved from the ACMS/Software Distribution server, along with either the software installation at that same location, or a CD purchased through ACMS/Software Distribution. These CDs take 3-6 weeks to arrive.
Support is not provided at these prices, but can be purchased directly
from microsoft via a 900 number.
Manuals
Manuals can be ordered as part of a quarterly quantity order. Most manuals now are published by Microsoft Press and are available from the UCSD Bookstore off the shelf. Typically the manuals we distribute are more in the "getting started" range, not detailed use.
Media
Media can be obtained only by copying the software over the network to your departmental server's disks from our facilities, or by ordering a CDROM.
We do not make up CD's, stock CD's, or deliver. You will need to pick up your media. We do not ship via campus mail. Orders are placed quarterly, or monthly on occasion. Electronic delivery is available for the most popular products immediately over windows networking or appletalk, but physical CD's have taken up to 2-4 months.
Each order for Microsoft products made through ACMS will be assessed a $20 transaction fee regardless of size or complexity. This fee will ONLY apply to the microsoft products requested, even if order is combined with other vendors who may or may not have transaction fees. Orders with multiple index number prefixes will be split into separate orders.
About Software Assurance:
Select 6.0 provides a new software maintenance service, called Software
Assurance (abbreviated "SA"). Software Assurance will be the only way
of getting software upgrades under Select 6.0, other than buying completely
new licenses. SA will replace all the upgrade options available under
the current Select program. SA can be purchased only on the same order
as the corresponding Select license. If SA is not ordered at the same
time as the Select license, it can never be ordered for that license.
(However, SA will be available separately for FPP and OEM licenses; see
below.)
The cost of SA will be a percentage of the license cost: 25% for server
products and 29% for desktop applications and operating systems. This
is the price per year. SA is purchased generally for the periodremaining
on the agreement and is sold only in even year increments.
An eligible FPP or OEM product may be put under Software Assurance at any time during the UC contract, provided that the order for SA is done within 90 days from the date the product was purchased. Most FPP and OEM products are eligible, but Office is not.
Note:
β A license for the Core CAL consists of the following components: Exchange CAL, Share Point Portal Server CAL, Systems Management Server CAL and Windows Server CAL.
Software Assurance is bought in even years for the remaining time in our agreement. See the dates on the examples above.

(UNLESS THERE IS A COMPELLING REASON, contact us if not wanting SA for the full term of the agreement).
