Troubleshooting
If you can "ping" swdist or swdist2k and your DNS name resolution is working,
you should be able to use Windows Networking. Try the following if you have
problems.
- Use IP addresses instead of names. The IP address for swdist is 132.239.50.99
and the IP address for swdist2k is 132.239.50.118. Example:
net use w: \\132.239.50.99\swdist
- Make sure the domain suffix "ucsd.edu" appears in the "Network -
TCP/IP properties, DNS" area.
- Make sure you are using a valid name server. UCSD's name servers
are 132.239.1.52, 128.54.16.2 and 137.110.0.26.
- Try enabling DNS resolution for windows resolution under WINS addresses.
- If you are in active directory and accessing the server swdist2k,
you may need to put the server name in front of the login name. Examples:
- swdist2k\microsoft-get
- swdist2k\campus30
- swdist2k\symantec
- swdist2k\campus31-mc
- If you are not part of the campus active directory, you will not be able to map a drive from Windows 95/98/ME, and must use one of the other methods.
- The server swdist2k.ucsd.edu does NOT run FTP service. Internet browsers such as Explorer use FTP service to download software. The server swdist.ucsd.edu does run FTP service.
- Other problems are NT domain or Active directory name confusion.
The campus central WINS servers provided by ACT (formerly Network Operations) are:
